Everton 4 Yeovil 0: Aaron Lennon, Ross Barkley and a Arouna Kone brace fire Toffees through

STRONG Blues side proves too much for League Two outfit as they progress in the EFL Cup

EVERTON breezed into the third round of the EFL Cup as a strong Toffees side romped to a 4-0 win over Yeovil.

Blues boss Ronald Koeman handed recent signings Yannick Bolasie and Ashley Williams their full debuts, while Romelu Lukaku started his first game of the season for the Premier League side.

Aaron Lennon broke the deadlock at Goodison on 28 minutes, firing in a right-footed strike after collecting the ball from James McCarthy.

It remained that way until the break before Yeovil's Matty Dolan dragged a shot wide of the post from six yards just after the restart.

And things got worse for Dolan and his team-mates as the hosts grabbed a second on 69 minutes. Captain for the night Ross Barkley doubled the advantage with a free-kick, catching out the goalkeeper by sneaking a long-ranger into the corner.

Sub Arouna Kone wrapped up the scoring late on after an assist from Lukaku and added a second in injury time.

FACTS, STATS, GOALS & LOLS

- ROSS BARKLEY, named captain of Everton for the first time in Phil Jagielka’s absence, responded superbly with a 69th minute free kick clincher.

- MAARTEN Stekelenburg looks like he will remain as Everton No 1 but he looked convincing in an early challenge at the feet of Otis Khan.

- RONALD Koeman made five changes but Glovers boss Darren Way was so short of bodies for the he could only name five subs and not seven.

- YANNICK Bolasie (£25M) and Ashley Williams (£12M) made their full debuts as Everton boss Ronald Koeman showed Goodison fans the shape of things to come.

- JAMES McCARTHY, wanted by Newcastle, Sunderland and Watford did his chances of a move no harm, brilliantly  setting up Aaron Lennon’s 27th minute opener.

- ROMELU LUKAKU is valued at £65M but after missing four chances and risking a dive in the first 20 minutes he hardly looked worth half that.
- ASHLEY Williams looked like he had been playing in the Everton back line half his career as he talked his fellow defenders and midfielders through the game.

- ARTUR Krysiak showed they have sweeper-keepers in the lower leagues as well as the Prem twice showing clever footwork on the edge of the box to foil attackers.

- TOM EAVES did plenty of had running as the lone striker – with extra motivation from being Liverpool-born and a Reds fan taking on Everton.

- EVERTON’S players wore black armbands in memory of former scout Sid Benson who recently passed away – brought Ross Barkley to the club.

WHAT THEY SAID

Ronald Koeman (Everton manager): "We wanted to take the game seriously and you saw that in our team line-up tonight. Lukaku, Williams and Bolasie all needed 90 minutes.

"The best option was to give Ross the captain's armband. It means a lot to him - he’s a big Evertonian & he's come through the academy."

Darren Way (Yeovil manager): "I was proud of the players today, really proud. You can't be too critical when you're against Premier League opposition like Everton.

"I felt proud to stand next to Ronald Koeman, but the way our fans conducted themselves from start to finish made me emotional at the end."
