US Open 2016: Kyle Edmund has reached the 3rd round of the US Open the first ever time he has reached this stage of a Grand Slam
British No 4 beats US wildcard to reached the 3rd round of the US Open
KYLE EDMUND is in the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time.
The British No 4 produced another mature performance to beat US wildcard Ernesto Escobedo 7-5 6-4 6-4 in a big-hitting, often tense encounter.
Edmund’s victory over No 13 seed Richard Gasquet in the first round looks more impressive on paper.
But if anything, this was a bigger test of the Brit’s character and talent.
This time, Edmund was the favourite to win, while the young American had nothing to lose.
Edmund said: “I’m very pleased. There were a lot of good things today.
“A lot of things also went better for me against Gasquet.
“This match was more about toughing it out and some longer rallies.

The Brit saw six break points come and go in the second but let out a huge roar after he had earned another with an Andy Murray-style chase of a lost cause and this time converted it.
Escobedo did not let up, though, and had his own chances in the third before Edmund finally broke his will in the ninth game and for the third time in the match held his nerve to serve it out.
