TOON OVERHAUL

How Newcastle could line up with Bruno Guimaraes, Dan Burn and Matt Targett after January transfer window

WITH just one day left of the January transfer window, the end is in sight for Newcastle's winter spending spree.

Bruno Guimaraes has been announced in a club-record £43million transfer, but the Toon might still fancy getting another deal or two over the line yet.

A £13m fee has been agreed with Brighton for the services of Dan Burn, with the 6ft 7in centre-back set to bolster Eddie Howe's backline.

Reports have also emerged that Newcastle are keen on a last-minute deal for Aston Villa left-back Matt Targett, who has fallen down the pecking order after the arrival of Lucas Digne.

And SunSport exclusively revealed yesterday that Newcastle have added Issa Diop to their long line of transfer targets.

Were those deals to go through, goalkeeper Martin Dubravka could see an entirely new back four in front of him to the one that started the month.

Although a rumoured late loan bid for Dean Henderson could even see his spot in doubt as well.

Kieran Trippier joined Newcastle the start of January and has been an ever-present since joining from Atletico Madrid.

Newcastle's leaky defence would mean both Burn and Diop would be likely to slot straight in as starting centre-backs alongside Trippier.

Add Targett on the left hand side and Howe has a backline more than capable of seeing off the drop.

Especially with playmaker Guimaraes added to his midfield.

He is set to start with Jonjo Shelvey and Joe Willock either side of him, behind a front three of Chris Wood, Allan Saint-Maximin, and Ryan Fraser.

Although Howe might have a selection headache when Callum Wilson returns from injury on how to shoe-horn him in alongside Wood and Saint-Maximin.

It's a welcome problem to have though, with Howe needing all the help he can get as he desperately battles to keep Newcastle in the Premier League.

The likes of Jesse Lingard, Dele Alli, Diego Carlos and James Tarkowski have also been linked with switches to St James' Park.

Howe is thought to be eager to add another centre-back to his ranks despite the signing of Burn, as well as another attacker.

But time is starting to run out ahead of tomorrow's deadline, which could turn out to be a busy day on Tyneside.
