Man Utd legend Roy Keane opens up on Sunderland manager job and reveals why he turned down return to Black Cats

ROY KEANE revealed the Sunderland job ‘wasn't meant to be’ after he turned down the Black Cats. 

Keane was the top target to replace Lee Johnson and return to Wearside 13 years after leaving as manager.

A deal collapsed last week following advanced talks. 

Alex Neil ended up taking charge of League One promotion chasers Sunderland instead.

And Keane, speaking at The Overlap Live in Manchester, said: "The deal has to be right for everyone. 

"It didn't fall into place last week. It wasn't meant to be.

"Everything has to be right - the right challenge, the right contract. 

"You have to fancy it.

"I've not had the opportunity the last few years. There has not been a club where I think, 'I'm the right fit for that club'.

The Manchester United legend, 50, will continue working as a pundit, adding: "If I don't get another chance, it's no big deal. 

"You need a bit of luck. The right club has to give you the call. That hasn't happened. It's no big deal."
