Journalist Sergio Gonzalez, via says the clubs are making progress on negotiations.

Fernandez is a defensive-minded midfielder, and has been one of the best performing players in Argentina, putting himself in contention for the World Cup.

He reportedly has a release clause of £20million, a bargain price for a promising young midfielder.

Fernandez is also believed to be on the transfer radar of Arsenal and Manchester United but City are in pole position.

Defensive midfielders command a high price in today's market, and Fernandez could prove to be a cheap alternative to the likes of Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham, who are also linked with moves this summer.

The 21-year-old is a River Plate youth product and spent the 2020 season on loan at Defensa y Justicia.

Following this, he was given a chance in the first team, and has not looked back since.

The youngster has made 20 appearances for River Plate this season, scoring two and assisting three goals in the season.

Fernandinho could be one player to make way from Man City, as his current contract expires this summer.

City, and other Premier League sides will have to move smartly for Enzo, as they face competition from the elites on the continent.

Real Madrid are thought to be eyeing up the Argentine, as they look for long term replacements for their current ageing midfield trio.

City's transfer priority this summer is allegedly a midfielder, with Matheus Nunes from Sporting in Portugal also linked.

City have also identified Erling Haaland as a long-term successor to Sergio Aguero, who left the club last summer.
