Referee Daniel Siebert gave a free-kick to City but somehow Felipe evaded punishment, not even picking up a yellow card.

But the centre-back did not take long to enter the referee's book, fouling Kevin De Bruyne minutes later.

Fortunately, Foden was able to continue but Pep Guardiola did send Jack Grealish to warm up on the touchline in case his team-mate was forced off.

There was a significant delay in play as physios attended to Foden with cameras showing a lot of blood.

But he was patched up with a big bandage and played on.

Diego Simeone's side are no stranger to the dark arts and have pulled out all the tricks in this quarter-final tie.

In the first leg Grealish was harassed non-stop after coming on with Angel Correa kicking the ball in his face as he lay on the ground at one point.

Simeone has also been accused of embracing the role of pantomime villain and his team committed 13 fouls at The Etihad.

The City star did not let the incident affect him however as he teed up Ilkay Gundogan inside the box - only for the German to strike the post.

Foden changed the game in Manchester, coming off the bench to set up De Bruynes's winner with a delightful pass that cut open a stubborn Atletico backline.

And he continued to be a thorn in Atletico's side after being named in City's starting line-up in Madrid.
