FRENKIE DE JONG will complete his move to Manchester United “within weeks” after getting the green light from Barcelona boss Xavi Hernandez.

The 25-year-old moved to the Nou Camp from Ajax back in 2019 but has failed to impress during his three years there.

That has led to speculation that the Catalans are ready to cash in and sell him this summer.

Incoming United boss Erik ten Hag worked with him during Ajax’s run to the Champions League semi-finals before the midfielder’s departure.

And he is allegedly keen to reunite with the star at Old Trafford.

De Jong appears set to become Ten Hag’s first signing at United.

Now are claiming that Xavi has endorsed the move.

He wants to revamp Barcelona’s midfield over the coming months and is looking to add AC Milan’s soon to be out of contract ace Franck Kessie to his squad.

Discussing the transfer speculation recently, Xavi said: “I haven't talked with him about his future.

“He is playing at a very good level and has to continue here – he can be one of the best midfielders in the world for years to come.

“If it were up to me, I would continue here for many more years.

“He is very important and can mark an era here. He has to score, assist and he has to be the protagonist.”

Ten Hag laid out his transfer blueprint for the Red Devils at a meeting in Amsterdam this week.

He was joined by United Football Director John Murtough, his Ajax assistant Mitchell van der Gaag, who will follow him to England, and Steve McCalren, who is also set to join his staff.

He is believed to want to sign two midfielders, a versatile forward and a centre-back this summer.
