CR7 was hooked at half-time by Erik Ten Hag, but his replacement - young Amad Diallo - put United into the lead shortly after.
Rayo got back into the game following a smart move that was finished off by Garcia, before ex-United striker Radamel Falcao hit the crossbar with an effort from distance.
It was a full debut for Lisandro Martinez in defence, and he looked very comfortable in the United back line.

Rayo looked sharp
The Spanish side looked very good today against United.
Isi Palazon was excellent in midfield, and they could have easily had two or three goals today.
They play Barcelona in their first game of La Liga this season, which will be no easy feat, but they did manage to beat the Catalan giants last season.
For a club of their size, with their budget, they are a very good watch and did their fans proud.
Man of the match
This afternoon's SunSport man of the match is Amad Diallo.
The Ivorian was excellent after coming on at half-time for Cristiano Ronaldo, and scored the goal that put United in the lead.
Isi Palazon was a close second, with Garnacho impressing too.
Who was your man of the match?
The kids are alright.
United have produced some wonderful talents at Carrington over the years, but this group of youngsters look like a really good crop.
Amad Diallo and Alejandro Garnacho were absolutely impeccable today in particular.
Both of them looked electric on the ball, and created the best chances of anyone on the pitch.
Diallo of course got the goal too.
A mention should also go to Ethan Laird and Zidane Iqbal, who both looked good in possession and worked really hard.
The future is bright, Manchester United fans.
CR7 hooked?
Well no one was surprised to see Amad Diallo come on at half-time for Manchester United, but who he replaced was a bit of a shock.
The board went up and it had Ronaldo's infamous number 7 on it.
He wasn't necessarily poor in the first half, but wasn't at his best either and after watching that you would expect Martial to be given the starting role against Brighton up next.
Nonetheless, his replacement was a great move by Erik Ten Hag, as Diallo was excellent, and scored with his second touch.
