‘Man Utd could write a book on how not to do transfers’ – Liverpool idol slams rivals after failing in Darwin Nunez bid

LIVERPOOL legend Robbie Fowler has slammed Manchester United's ability to do transfers, saying they could write a book on how not to do them.

United have been linked with a host of stars this window but have thus far failed to get any over the line.

One of the highest profile names they were linked with this window was Darwin Nunez, but the 22-year-old snubbed them and opted to join Liverpool instead in a deal worth up £85million.

Former Reds striker Fowler praised Liverpool's business but lambasted United's inability to secure signings.

Via , he said: "United being there in the background - for me - highlights just why this could so easily be another masterstroke for Liverpool in the transfer market.

"I don’t want to be cruel, but United could have written a book on how not to do transfers in recent seasons. Signing players just because you don’t want them to go to a rival? Check and double check.

"Cristiano has done his job well enough, but signing him because he could have gone to City? That just had disaster written all over it.  And the same with Alexis Sanchez. No, not the same, 10 times worse.

"That deal highlights everything that has been wrong at Old Trafford. How much did it cost? About 500 grand a week in wages, which I saw somewhere cost them about 20 million quid a goal!

"Much, much worse though, was that it didn’t just break United’s pay structure, it shattered it.

"That’s how a goalkeeper can end up on £400,000 a week, and a midfielder like Pogba who couldn’t even get in the team half the time on even more."

Earlier today it was reported that The Red Devils pursuit of Jurrien Timber was dead in the water after Louis van Gaal warned the 21-year-old he could lose his place in the Dutch national team if he wasn't playing regularly at United.

Elsewhere United have continued to pursue Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong, thus far to no avail.

Barcelona are holding out for a fee of £80million, but United know the Spaniard's need the cash and are trying to coax the fee lower, despite CEO Richard Arnold admitting money is "there" for a deal.

United have also been linked with Christian Eriksen, but the appeal of Champions League football could draw him to former club Tottenham over United.
