And while they are both still in the hunt for a trophy at the Championships, they insist they are not too competitive in their relationship.

Leicester-born Katie said yesterday that she was “very lucky” to have a boyfriend who understands the pressures of competing.

She said: “He’s so supportive of me in the job that I do and completely understands.

“Not many people do. To have that kind of connection where they know what you’re going through, they know the lows and highs, it does feel very comforting. I’m lucky to have him.”

The couple have been supporting each other in the run-up to the tournament, with Katie saying she loves to wake up every day and know she has the “good vibes” from their relationship.

She said: “He has been a really big support for me in terms of through the tough moments, being in the gym with me when I was doing the rehab for the start of this last injury.”

Alex said: “We kind of both go through similar lifestyles.

“We both struggled at times with the same things. I reckon we both would rather if we didn’t play the sport because that way, we could probably see each other more often but it comes with the territory and when it comes to that we understand each other quite well.

"We know all the doubts and thoughts in the processes we both go through, and we just try to be there for each other win, lose, or draw. That’s probably the most important thing.”

Elsewhere at SW19 yesterday, Brits Jay Clarke, Paul Jubb, Katie Swan and Sonay Kartal were knocked out.
