Calvin Bassey completes stunning Ajax move as Rangers confirm largest deal in club’s history
CALVIN BASSEY has completed his stunning switch from Rangers to Ajax.
The 22-year old Ibrox standout’s move to the Dutch giants sees him become the club’s record transfer sale.
Worth just shy of an initial £20 million, Bassey‘s fee eclipses the initial £12 million the Gers received when Nathan Patterson moved to Everton in January.
It could rise to 26.5 million euros, which is roughly £22.5 million.
The Nigeria international has penned a five-year deal in Amsterdam.
Ajax fought off plenty of competition to land Bassey, who had also been strongly linked with Brighton over the past week.
Just days ago, it was reported that SEVEN clubs from a cross Europe were seriously interested in Bassey.
The deal nets Rangers an incredible profit on a player they plucked from the Leicester City youth team just over two years ago.
The Light Blues parted with just a £230,000 development fee after l landing the defender on a pre-contract from the former Premier League champions.
Bassey’s transfer to Ajax caps-off an incredible rise over the past year.
His first season at Ibrox saw him play a relatively small role, making 15 appearances in all competitions, often as an understudy to starting left back Borna Barisic.
Last season, however, Bassey quickly became one of Rangers’ star men and transfer interest intensified as a result.
Playing in 50 games across the campaign, Bassey established himself as not only a left back, but a centre back as well.
His starring role in Rangers’ run to the Europa League Final made him a firm favourite among the Light Blues support.
Bassey was left out of the Rangers squad for Saturday’s 2-1 win over Blackpool, and Giovanni van Bronckhorst conceded after the game that he expected him to leave.
It could be a somewhat new-look backline for the Light Blues in the campaign ahead.
As well as Bassey, Leon Balogun has exited the club.
John Souttar has joined from Hearts, while former Celtic target Ben Davies joined the club last night.
The former Preston man is currently at Liverpool although hasn’t made a first team appearance since the Reds beat Celtic to his signing in January 2021.
