Erik ten Hag is keen on a reunion with the former Ajax star at Manchester United, and the clubs have agreed a £72million fee for the Dutchman.

But an issue over unpaid wages at Barca means the deal cannot go through.

Now De Jong is set for fresh talks with Barcelona chiefs in a bid to finally resolve his future, according to Spanish outlet .

The midfielder is currently on pre-season tour in the USA, where a meeting has been set for the coming hours to "untangle the situation" between De Jong and the club.

The LaLiga giants are willing to sell De Jong after splashing the cash on Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski.

Reports suggest they have also agreed a £51million deal to sign Jules Kounde.

And in order to successfully register all their new signings for the upcoming season they need to offload players quickly.

De Jong has been used out of position in Barca's last two pre-season games against Inter Miami and Real Madrid - coming off the bench to play centre-back.

Boss Xavi is claimed to have made it clear to De Jong that minutes in midfield will be harder to come by this season.

United meanwhile are eager to recruit De Jong to play in midfield.

Chelsea are also believed to be interested in a swoop for the Dutch international.

And Xavi himself has admitted the cash-strapped club could be forced to sell due to Financial Fair Play restrictions.

Speaking about De Jong after beating Real Madrid in Las Vegas, he said: "We’ve had private conversations that are very important, that I will not reveal here.

He also dismissed rumours that he was playing De Jong out of position to send a message to the player.
