For his efforts, 'Bill Hill' presented Staunton with an award for winning MOTM...a bag of potatoes.

They were sourced from Kelly’s Fruit and Veg; a produce shop based in Wicklow Town that had sponsored the prize.

The photo subsequently went viral, with Kelly's even posting a video of one of their employees signing a bag of potatoes while wearing a Wicklow GAA tracksuit top.

In a statement on Facebook, however, Wicklow GAA clarified that they had no formal association with either Kelly's or Bill Hill.

The statement apologised to Staunton for any embarrassment, before confirming that an investigation had been opened.

Wicklow GAA said: "Wicklow GAA would like to apologise for any embarrassment caused to the player involved in the Man of the Match presentation after the recent hurling final [sic].

"Wicklow GAA would like to state that Bill Hill or Kelly’s Fruit and Veg are NOT official partners or representatives of Wicklow GAA and the County Board are investigating the matter."
