Thus far The Red Devils have been knocked back in their approaches to sign him.

Last month Ajax RAISED their price tag for the winger to £84million - a price United chiefs are thus far unwilling to meet.

has reported United will give buying the winger another go, but know the deal is "more than difficult" due to Ajax not wanting to sell.

Instead, United could opt to sign PSV winger Cody Gakpo.

The 23-year-old has started the season in electric form, with three goals and four assists in his opening six games of the season.

One of these assists came against Rangers in Champions League qualifying, with the first leg at Ibrox Stadium ending 2-2 on Tuesday.

In their hunt for a winger, United are now also considering Chelsea's Christian Pulisic.

The American is open to the idea of moving to Old Trafford, but Blues owner Todd Boehly is set to play hardball over the departure of his compatriot.

United want to bring Pulisic in on a loan move, but Boehly prefers a permanent sale and wants to recoup as much of the £58m the club paid for him as possible.

The new Chelsea owner won the bidding for the club over the likes of British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who is now rumoured to be interested in buying Manchester United from the Glazers.
