MAURICIO POCHETTINO is on the brink of being appointed Chelsea’s next permanent manager.
That’s according to bookmakers Betfair, who suspended betting on the former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain boss taking over at Stamford Bridge following a flurry of bets.
Pochettino, 51, was odds-on at 3/10 when the market closed with Burnley’s Vincent Kompany and Roma’s Jose Mourinho his nearest contenders.
claim that a final round of negotiations are already underway with both parties expecting a swift agreement over the terms of his appointment.
Pochettino will be joined at Chelsea by his assistant manager and head of conditioning Jesus Perez, first-team coach Miguel D’Agostino, goalkeeping coach Toni Jimenez and son Sebastiano, a sports scientist.
Chelsea players are excited by the prospect of Pochettino, who himself has been impressed by the long-term vision of co-controlling owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali.
Betfair spokesperson Sam Rosbottom said: “Punters seem convinced that Mauricio Pochettino is going to be the new Chelsea manager!
“And Betfair has suspended betting on this market after the former Spurs boss was heavily backed when 3/10 to take over at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea next manager - SUSPENDED
Betfair odds when market was suspended
- Mauricio Pochettino – 3/10
- Vincent Kompany – 7/1
- Jose Mourinho – 10/1
- Marcelo Gallardo – 11/1
- Julian Nagelsmann – 14/1
- Luis Enrique – 14/1
- Ange Postecoglou – 14/1
- Frank Lampard – 16/1
“Pochettino could be turning his back on his former employers and joining their London rivals, leaving Spurs still searching for a new manager with Julian Nagelsmann the 5/2 to be the next man at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.”
However, TalkSPORT’s Simon Jordan isn’t convinced that Pochettino will be successful in West London.
He said: “I don’t think it’s a marriage made in heaven.
“That being said, I’ve never believed that Pochettino has the winning gene. I think he’s a really good manager, I think he’ll get you to a certain level.
“There’s something about Pochettino that just tells me he doesn’t have this ruthless streak that someone like Thomas Tuchel had and someone like obviously the great Alex Ferguson had and Jose Mourinho has. This inability to see anything other than just winning at all costs.”
