Arsene Wenger urges the FA to give Gareth Southgate the time to make his name as England boss
ARSENE WENGER has urged the FA to give Gareth Southgate the time to make his name as England manager.
Southgate is set to be confirmed as full-time Three Lions boss if they beat struggling Scotland next month after stepping in following the shock sacking of Sam Allardyce last month.
Wenger remains in the sights of the FA in case things do not go to plan against Scotland and Spain.
But the Frenchman (left) said: “Southgate is the outstanding candidate for the job and I am happy to see that he has a good opportunity to show his quality.
“The difficulty in England is that there is always the demand for a big-name manager.

“What is most important should be the competence of the person because then he can make a name for himself.”
Wenger, who recently celebrated his 20th year at the Gunners, added: “I’m not at the end of my knowledge and desire to become a better manager.
“I just try to do well — and even if I feel I don’t do well I will maybe manage somewhere else.”
The 66-year-old also made it clear that when the day finally arrives for him to leave Arsenal, he will not be the man to anoint his successor.
He said: "It’s not my job to choose the next manager. That is the board’s responsibility. If they ask my opinion, I will give it in an honest way.”
