Gardai make three arrests as part of probe into alleged League of Ireland match-fixing following day-time operation

THREE men are being quizzed over an alleged match fixing scam in League of Ireland games.
Two of the men were arrested in Dublin and the other in the east of the country.
One of the arrested men met with Gardai by appointment.
Before this week’s arrest, another man was also arrested in the north west of the country last week.
Investigators from Interpol’s Match Fixing Task Force were also involved in this week’s operation.
And we understand the investigation is also being closely followed by UEFA.
This week’s arrests are being co-ordinated by the Anti-Bribery and Corruption Unit at the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau
Det Supt Catharina Gunne said: “Match fixing and corruption is a threat to all sport at all levels and undermines public confidence in the fairness of sport.
“It can allow organised crime to infiltrate sport in order to use it to make illicit gains or launder proceeds of crime.
“The Anti-Bribery and Corruption Unit will take positive action where necessary to disrupt such criminality.

The latest arrests bring the total number of people quizzed about the alleged scams to fourteen.
This week’s development comes after two League of Ireland players were questioned over the alleged match fixing in May.
All of those lifted have been questioned on suspicion of corruption, deception and theft.
It’s understood detectives are investigating if deliberate fouls took place during games.
They’re also looking at allegations of huge bets being placed on losing games and how fans were putting money on their own team to lose.
The arrests are the latest phase of an Operation Brookweed probe into alleged unusual betting patterns.
