Costa was named in the Wolves starting line up for the first time ahead of kick off at Stamford Bridge.

After scoring 59 goals in 120 games for Chelsea, the striker fired a blank on his return to London.

A frustrating afternoon saw Costa subbed off on 57 minutes.

And the forward took the long way round as he slowly made his way off the pitch from the opposite side of the stadium to the dugouts.

Stamford Bridge rose as one to give Costa a standing ovation as he walked around the side of the pitch and back to the Wolves bench.

Costa himself gladly returned the applause and waved to the fans he endeared himself so much to during his spell at the club.

Fans on social media loved the heartwarming moment between Costa and the Blues faithful.

One supporter wrote: "Love Costa getting a cheer from the Chelsea crowd as he gets subbed off."

Another added: "Biggest cheer of the day as Costa walks round the pitch."

And a third said: "Diego Costa cheers. Melts me heart."

On the pitch Kai Havertz headed Chelsea ahead on the stroke of half-time after a first period dominated by the hosts.

Christian Pulisic then made it 2-0 nine minutes after the break, dinking the ball over Jose Sa with his left foot after an excellent Mason Mount pass.
