Man City star Joao Cancelo shown red card and gives away penalty before heated exchange with Pep Guardiola vs Fulham

MANCHESTER CITY full-back Joao Cancelo gave away a penalty and was sent off before having a heated exchange with manager Pep Guardiola during their 2-1 win over Fulham.

After Julian Alvarez had given the champions the lead at the Etihad, Cancelo pushed Harry Wilson in the back when the Cottagers forward was through on goal.

Referee Darren England pointed straight to the spot and subsequently dismissed the Portuguese defender.

Man City were left raging at the decision as Fulham's Andreas Pereira tucked away the penalty to level things up.

And Guardiola appeared to have a furious altercation with Cancelo as the City man made his way off the pitch.

Speaking about the incident on , ex-Man City defender Nedum Onuoha said: "In this instance, I think it was a great run by Wilson.

"As he took the ball and he went across Cancelo, he was left in a position where he can't get out of the way and [it] was a big collision.

"I don't think he intended to do it. At the same breath, he's gone down and it's a foul.

"It's in the penalty box. He was in the wrong spot and got caught out."

Cancelo's dismissal and Fulham's resulting equaliser looked to be a major blow to Man City as they attempted to hunt down Premier League leaders Arsenal.

Guardiola's men started the weekend two points behind the Gunners.

But City somehow managed to grind out the three points as a stoppage time Erling Haaland penalty earned them a 2-1 victory.

It takes them one point above Arsenal ahead of Mikel Arteta's side's trip to Stamford Bridge to take on London rivals Chelsea on Sunday.
