Giovanni van Bronckhorst will be SACKED by Rangers as Ibrox chiefs decide to end his 12-month Ibrox reign

RANGERS are set to call time on Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Ibrox reign.

SunSport understands the 47-year-old is poised to be axed following a catastrophic Champions League campaign and with his side nine points behind Celtic in the title race.

Talks are understood to have taken place over the weekend, with van Bronckhorst informed of the board’s decision late on Sunday night.

The Dutchman took charge a year ago when he replaced Steven Gerrard.

He guided Gers to last season’s Europa League Final, while also securing a return to the group stages of the Champions League.

But his injury-ravaged side were dismantled by Ajax, Napoli and Liverpool in a humiliating campaign.

The pressure has been building since Gers lost to Celtic in the first Old Firm derby of the season.

Draws against Hibs and Livingston followed before a disastrous 2-1 defeat to St Johnstone in Perth.

The final straw came against St Mirren with van Bronckhorst’s side held to a 1-1 draw in what looks like the Dutchman’s last game in charge.

It's expected an announcement will be made in the next 24 hours, possibly even by the end of today.

Van Bronckhorst was odds-on to be sacked before the New Year and now discussion turns to who will replace him in the Ibrox hotseat.

Michael Beale, Sean Dyche and former boss Gerrard are three names who top most bookies' lists of likely replacements.

Beale has impressed at QPR in his first outing as a manager in his own right after moving on from Aston Villa in the summer.

Dyche has been out of work since being sacked by Burnley.

Gerrard is still the current favourite, having been sacked by Villa last month.

Other names that have been mentioned in connection with the job are Bodo/Glimt boss Kjetil Knutsen and even former Liverpool, Newcastle and Real Madrid manager Rafa Benitez.
