MICHAEL DAWSON powered Hull into the League Cup quarter-finals for the second year running.
Bristol City sub Lee Tomlin did manage to set up a nervy finale in stoppage time as he ran at the Hull defence and lashed a deflected effort past the helpless Jakupovic - but it was not enough.
The ex-England centre-back, who won the competition with Spurs in 2008, headed home Ryan Mason’s corner just after the break.
That was after Harry Maguire had nodded in another Mason corner a minute before half-time.
Tammy Abraham came on for the much-changed hosts on the hour but by then, it was too late as Mike Phelan recorded his first win since being named permanent Tigers boss.

FACTS, GOALS AND LOLS
- MIKE PHELAN finally had something to smile about. Barring shock wins over Leicester and Swansea in August, it has largely been doom and gloom for the Tigers caretaker-turned-permanent boss - but a spot in the EFL Cup quarter-finals should lift the spirits.
- ABEL HERNANDEZ is one of those players too good for the Championship, but not good enough for the Prem. He hit 24 goals during Hull’s promotion season last year and looked lively again against second-tier opposition here - if only he could transfer that form to the top flight, Hull might not look so doomed.
- A CUP run is not Lee Johnson’s priority. Despite a place in the last eight on offer, the Bristol boss made NINE changes - and it showed, from their naive defending and blunt attacking.
- TAMMY ABRAHAM had to settle for just half an hour - and by then the damage was done. Johnson rested him in favour of 37-year-old Aaron ‘Wilbrahimovic’ Wilbraham - but the golden boy of the lower leagues came on 60 minutes.
- THE view from the new press box at Ashton Gate in the West Stand is mightily impressive. The now 27,000-seater stadium looks like it could provide a real spine-tingling atmosphere at some point - but not tonight, in front of just 16,149.
- RYAN MASON’S delivery shows why Hull shelled out £10million for his services. His corners were right on the money and created both goals. He almost looped another corner in at the far post on 76 minutes.
- CITY - or at least their reserves - need to work on their set-pieces. There was not much between either side barring two corners where the marking was non-existent.
- CALLUM O’DOWDA is one to watch. The City whizkid, signed for over £1million from Oxford in the summer, looked a real livewire on the wing and came close on a couple of occasions.
- HULL still have some way to go before they look a confident side. They looked nervy holding onto their two-goal lead as the hosts pushed - and no wonder, given their league form this season.
- JOSH TYMON looks a prospect for City. The 17-year-old was only making his second start but was accomplished in the tackle.
