Travelling Three Lions supporters couldn't have given the defender a better reception at Khalifa International Stadium, however, giving him a large ovation before the game.

But the 29-year-old was mocked by Iran fans prior to Monday's match in Qatar, with fans bringing mean spirited banners into the ground.

One read: "It's not coming home because of Harry Maguire."

While a second jibed: "Harry Maguire your defence is terrifying."

He shook off jokes to have a storming first-half.

The centre-half was rarely troubled at the back, but looked assured when called upon defensively.

And he proved to be a huge threat in the opposition penalty area.

Maguire could even have had a penalty just three minutes into the game when he was bear hugged by his marker after Kieran Trippier swung in a corner.

He was unlucky not to score, cannoning a header off the bar at 0-0.

He was subsequently able to turn provider, nodding down a corner for Bukayo Saka to volley England 2-0 in front.

The Three Lions went in at the break leading 3-0, with Jude Bellingham and Raheem Sterling scoring their other two goals.

Maguire was substituted shortly after Iran scored in the 68th minute, being replaced by Eric Dier having appeared to take a knock.

England eventually won the game 6-2 with Saka getting another and substitutes Jack Grealish and Marcus Rashford also finding the net.
