But the club are also reportedly keen on tying David de Gea down to a new deal on a reduced wage rather than replacing the Spaniard completely.

report that United are working on getting a deal done for Porto keeper Costa, who is enjoying a great season in between the sticks.

They add that the Portuguese press are speculating United are working towards a deal that could even cost more than the £72m that Chelsea paid for Kepa Arrizabalaga in 2018.

This would mean Costa could break the transfer record for a keeper.

But the report adds that other clubs are interested in the 23-year-old stopper.

Reports had indicated that United's pursuit of new goalies meant that de Gea's time at Old Trafford was coming to an end.

The 32-year-old's £375k-a-week deal expires at the end of the season but Old Trafford chiefs have reportedly indicated a willingness to trigger an extension.

United want to reduce de Gea's wages to closer to £100k, according to AS, but negotiations are taking some time.
