Joe Marler’s comments aimed at Jake Heenan sparked a brawl during Harlequins’ game against Bristol

It is not the first time Marler has been in hot water for acts on the rugby pitch either.

An RFU disciplinary hearing on Friday banned the 32-year-old for six weeks, with four suspended, meaning he will only miss two matches.

And he has publicly apologised to New Zealander Heenan, 30.

What did Joe Marler say?

Joe Marler told Heenan his mother is a “w***” as the players were getting set for a scrum during the Harlequins game against the Bears.

The comment was aimed at Heenan, whose mother is currently in hospital.

Here is the full exchange:

Jake Heenan: “Hey, brother, you’re better than that, hey?”

Joe Marler: “I’m not your brother. I’m clearly not your brother am I.”

Heenan: “You’re better than that mate.”

Marler: “There’s no way I’m from the same mother as you. Your mother is a ****ing whore.”

Marler then crouches down to get set for the scrum and repeats: “Your mother’s a whore.”

A scuffle then breaks out between both sets of packs.

Referee Karl Dickson: “Who started that?”

Max Lahiff: “Marler called his mother a whore.”

Heenan: “My mum’s in hospital with cancer.”

Referee Dickson: “Alex just take him back. Take him back. I know there was an allegation of what was said.

“I actually didn’t hear what was said. If it was really clear on the comms afterwards, it will be dealt with.”

It clearly riled the Kiwi, understandably so, and it quickly started a brawl between the two sets of players.

Heenan could then be heard saying to referee Karl Dickson: “Karl, Karl, my mum is in hospital.”

After footage of Marler’s remarks emerged, there was widespread condemnation in the rugby union world.

Marler apologised to Heenan on Twitter, saying: “I’m sorry @HeenanJake – p*ss poor from me. Owe you a pint/coffee in the new year.”

It is understood he has also apologised to Heenan directly.
