EFL news: Morecambe players and staff have not been paid by new Brazilian owner

Worrying times for League Two side Morecambe as players and club staff have not been paid just days before vital FA Cup game at home to Coventry City

MORECAMBE players and staff have worryingly not been paid wages due to them last month.

The League Two side entertain Coventry City in the FA Cup first round on Sunday were taken over by Brazilian businessman Diego Lemos in September.

All staff were due to be paid at the end of October, however the players' union, the Professional Footballers' Association has stepped in to work with the club and EFL to sort out the problem.

"Apparently there's been cash-flow problems, I spoke to the owner and spoke to the Football league, and at the moment, no, the lads have not had their wages on time." said PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor.

"We have been assured it will be sorted next week, so it's fingers crossed that will happen."

"There has been some talks of selling a player, we're awaiting a response from Shaun Harvey (EFL chief executive) and the league's lawyers to see if the matter can be resolved as soon as possible and we have been assured that will be the case"

 

The 35-year-old Brazilian lives in Qatar worked formerly as a FIFA agent based in Asia.

Months before the club was sold to Lemos, chairman and majority shareholder for 16 years Peter McGuigan claimed the Lancashire outfit were "virtually debt free" "the time is right for a new owner to take the club forward and build on a strong platform".
