The Castleford Tigers loose forward, 33, has since apologised through the Super League club and vowed to “work on my decision-making around alcohol”.

Wife and mum-of-three Lauren, 33, was left “numb” over the incident and has told friends “the marriage is over”.

She said: “There’s no way you can come back after something so horrific.

“It is one trillion per cent finished.

“What kind of example would I be setting to my children – particularly my girls – if I were to give it another go?

“I want them to know that this is not alright, that it isn’t acceptable behaviour in a relationship and that we all have self-worth.”

Lauren remained at the family home in Castleford, West Yorks., yesterday and told how half-term with the children had saved her.

The primary school teacher told the friend: “Without the kids being here I would have been on my own and probably gone insane.

“I never imagined this would ever happen.

“He’s text me a few times to say how sorry he is but he knows that there’s no coming back from what he’s done.

“I now have to think about my children and begin rebuilding our future together. It’s daunting, but he’s got no one to blame but himself.”

Westerman was seen earlier today for the first time since the scandal broke as he arrived for training ahead of Castleford’s Super League curtain-raiser against Hull on Sunday.

Lauren married Westerman in 2014 at the luxurious Wood Hall Hotel and Spa in Wetherby, West Yorks.

The couple have three kids together, including a 15-year-old.

Devastated Lauren was sent the appalling video before it was posted online and immediately confronted her husband.

It later went viral on Twitter.

Lauren wrote: “Can I make this VERY clear that this is NOT me!!!!!!”

She added: “And we have three children, one of whom is almost 15, and she doesn’t need to see things like this all over social media!”

In a statement issued through the club the disgraced player said: “Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to wholeheartedly apologise to my family and friends for my actions.

“I’d also like to apologise to the supporters, sponsors, staff, and directors of Castleford Tigers as well as my teammates.

“I’d like to extend this apology to the game of rugby league, and I have realised that I need to work on my decision-making around alcohol.”

Club bosses issued him with a substantial fine and ordered him to undertake community service to educate young people on the effects of alcohol.
