Chelsea paid Premier League record compensation fee for Graham Potter as details of move from Brighton emerge

NABBING Graham Potter from Brighton cost Chelsea a whopping £21.5million.

It was reported in September that the Blues paid over £20m in compensation to prise Potter away from the Amex Stadium after sacking Thomas Tuchel.

And for the 2021-22 season, which were published on Wednesday, confirmed the exact number to be £21.5m.

The £22m in compensation Bayern Munich paid RB Leipzig for manager Julian Nagelsmann in 2021 is the biggest ever fee paid for a boss, according to .

That makes the fee paid for Potter the highest amount spent on a manager in Premier League history.

And it also makes it the second highest compensation fee for a manager in football history.

The Blues moved to appoint Potter in September after owner Todd Boehly axed Tuchel.

But landing the club's top target did not come cheap.

As well as spending over £600m in the last two transfer windows on players, a staggering £21.5m was also shelled out in order to bring Potter to Stamford Bridge.

Despite being a long-term appointment, Potter found himself under pressure within months of taking the job.

A run of poor results means the Blues are currently languishing tenth in the Prem table with just 11 games of the campaign left to play.

However, there have been green shoots of life for Potter in recent weeks.

The Blues beat Borussia Dortmund to progress to the Champions League quarter-finals.

That victory was sandwiched between Prem wins over Leeds and Leicester.

A 2-2 draw against struggling Everton last time out hampered progress, but Potter and Co will be looking to get back to winning ways when they return to action against Aston Villa after the international break.
