When Sir Alex Ferguson announced he was retiring after 26 years service and on the back of his 13th league title the world of football anticipated who would be his replacement.

The Red Devils went for a man of similar mould and background when they appointed fellow Scot Moyes, although the fairy tale move for the ex-Everton boss didn't go to plan and he was sacked after just ten months in charge.

Murs is a Man United obsessive and got to train with Schweinsteiger, where he found a slight mishap in the knowledge of the midfield maestro.

Murs said: ''I actually trained with Schweinsteiger. He gave me a pair of signed boots, which I wore in the 2014 Soccer Aid match. They were super-comfortable.

"At the time David Moyes had just taken charge of United and they were looking to buy new players. Bastian asked me, 'Who is this David Moyes?'. He didn’t know who he was!''

Schweinsteiger didn't join Man United until 2015 under Louis Van Gaal but considering the huge interest the Premier League generates worldwide its surprising that the German did not know of Moyes, especially as he was involved in one of the most high profile replacements ever.

The 32-year-old's career has not gone quite to plan since his arrival in the summer of 2015 and he has now been frozen out by United's third instalment since Ferguson, Jose Mourinho.

There was some hope Schweinsteiger may return to the United squad after rejoining first team training but the club have told him he can leave in January.

Schweinsteiger is likely to listen to the offers being lined up by at least five MLS clubs who can offer him a large salary to see out his career, while United are unlikely to want a transfer fee.

Schweinsteiger will certainly not feature against Arsenal in the mouthwatering tie on Saturday. He was run ragged in the reverse fixture last season when United were thumped 3-0 at the Emirates.
