When is the Sports Personality of the Year 2016, where are the awards held and can I still get tickets?

BBC Sports Personality of the Year returns in December with Andy Murray looking to become the first ever three-time winner of the award.

However he will face stiff competition from the likes of Mo Farah, who spectacularly retained his 5000m and 10,000m Olympic titles, and Laura Trott, who won a fourth Olympic cycling gold.

Here's everything you need to know about the big night.

When is Sports Personality of the Year 2016?

The event will be held on Sunday 18th December. You can watch it on BBC1 at 6.40pm.

This represents the second time in a row that it has been held the week before Christmas.

However Andy Murray is expected to be in Miami during the ceremony, which is bound to get organisers worked up as his last video acceptance of the award, in 2013, did not go down well.

Sports fans who also like the X Factor will be relieved to know that the two shows will NOT clash this year, with the X Factor final being held a week earlier on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th December.

Where is it being held?

Sports Personality of the Year 2016 will be held at the Genting Arena in Birmingham.

The ceremony returns to England after being held in Belfast last year and Glasgow in 2014.
