Mike McFarlane’s family announce he is in hospital in ‘critical condition’ after claims Team GB Olympian had died at 63

BRITISH Olympics legend Mike McFarlane's family have revealed he is currently "in critical condition" in hospital.

On Wednesday, England Athletics claimed the sprinter had died at the age of 63.

But McFarlane's family have moved to reveal the 1988 silver medallist is still alive.

A family statement read: "As of today June 1st 2023 we would like to announce that Mike McFarlane - OBE is still alive despite the articles released.

"He is in in hospital in critical condition.

"Any further updates will be officially from us as a family.

"We would like to express our gratitude for all the prayers, well wishes and support shown during this difficult time.

"We know how much Mike means to everyone near and far.

"We ask that you respect our privacy as we spend time with him."

The sprinter was an Olympic silver medallist and won gold at the Commonwealth Games.

McFarlane picked up his Olympic medal during the 1988 Games in Seoul, South Korea and his Commonwealth gold in 1982 in Brisbane, Australia.

In his youth he was coached by John Isaacs and was an English Schools’ AA winner.

MacFarlane would also go on to win a gold in the 1985 European Indoor Championships event in Athens.

After retiring from competing, MacFarlane took up coaching and helped the England Athletics' women’s sprint relay team in 2012.
