The US Open headed into a dramatic final play with Rickie Fowler and Wyndham Clark joint-top ahead of Rory McIlroy.

The tournament got off to an incredible start with Fowler and Xander Schauffele equalling the lowest-ever round in a Major, both shooting just 62.

Several dramatic days then set-up a climactic finale, with McIlroy battling Fowler and Clark for the win.

Fowler fell away as Clark sealed his first-ever Major - beating McIlroy by just one shot.

McIlroy missed a birdie putt on the 17th hole which allowed Clark to clinch victory, and afterwards the 34-year-old said he will rue his missed chances.

The Northern Irishman has been chasing an elusive fifth Major since 2014 but vowed to keep returning until he is successful again.

He said: “The putter - I’ll rue some chances. That wedge on 14 coming up short, too. Just didn’t quite get the job done.

“I’ll keep coming back. I’m right there but it’s such fine margins.

"I'm getting closer. The more I keep putting myself in these positions, sooner or later it's going to happen for me. Just got to regroup and get focused for Hoylake in a few weeks' time.

"The last real two chances I've had at majors I feel like have been pretty similar performances, like St Andrews last year and then here. Not doing a lot wrong, but I didn't make a birdie since the first hole today.

"If anything, I felt like over the last two days when the greens started to get quite crispy that my speed control was off a little bit, and I think that's the reason I didn't hole a lot of putts.

"I don't think I was hitting bad putts, just hitting them with slightly the wrong speed. Some were coming up short, some were going a little long.

"I can play free and I think I proved that. Just felt like my speed control was a little off with the putter. That's probably why I didn't make a birdie since the first."
