He played for his country in last week’s goalless friendly draw with Cape Verde but he was absent for Saturday’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifying defeat to South Africa.

Morocco manager Walid Regragui then revealed why Amrabat was not involved as he hinted that the star could be about to leave Fiorentina.

He said: “I decided to let him go.

“He's played a lot of games this year, I wouldn't want to risk that, especially as he'll be signing for a new club soon.”

Amrabat's agent recently revealed that the Italian club are open to the idea of letting him go, but only if a suitable offer is received.

And he is not short of potential suitors after his heroics at the World Cup and in Serie A caught the eye.

United have been long-term admirers of the star while Barcelona have also expressed an interest in signing Amrabat.

Now claims that Atletico Madrid are also now lining-up a swoop for the ace.

Amrabat only has a year left on his contract at Fiorentina, the team who were defeated by West Ham in the Europa Conference League Final a fortnight ago.

And his brother, Nordin Amrabat, confirmed United's interest when speaking to and says they failed with a late January move for him.

He said: “I can name three clubs who were concrete in the last two or three days of the transfer window.

“Manchester United wanted a loan with an option to buy deal, Fiorentina rejected.”

Amrabat came through the ranks at Dutch club Utrecht before a switch to Feyenoord.

Following one season with them he was off to Belgium to join Club Brugge but he headed to Italy on loan to Hellas Verona in 2019/20.

His displays then earned him his move to Fiorentina three years ago, and he has played over 100 games for the club since.
