But he's set to lace up his boots and take part in pre-season in just a couple of weeks after inking a three-year deal with The Hatters.

Powell - one of Sir Alex Ferguson's final signings - joined Manchester United from Crewe Alexandra in the summer of 2012 in a deal in the region of £6million.

He made six starts for the Red Devils in his debut season at Old Trafford, which was followed by loan spells with Wigan, Leicester and Hull.

Powell returned to Wigan in the summer of 2016 following the expiration of his contract at the Theatre of Dreams and spent three more seasons with The Latics.

That stint there was followed by a 2019 move to Stoke, where he remained until just a few weeks ago.

The 29-year-old : “I’m really happy to be here and to be a part of what’s happening at County right now.

Stockport manager Dave Challinor is delighted to have Powell on board, saying: “I’d like to welcome Nick to the club.

"His reputation precedes him really in terms of his quality and ability.

"And for him to select us as the next chapter in his career is a big compliment for the club.

"In terms of the team and squad, to have a talent such as him in our corner will undoubtedly make us stronger and we’re really looking forward to working with him.”
