EFL Cup semi-final draw: Prem giants Liverpool and Manchester United avoid each other for two-leg clashes
Jurgen Klopp will be able to get some serious January scouting done on his trip to St Mary's
JURGEN KLOPP will have the opportunity to get some January scouting done as Liverpool have been drawn against to Southampton in the EFL Cup semi-final.
St Mary's will host the first leg on the week commencing 9th January.
League Cup semi-final draw
Week commencing 9th January:
Manchester United v Hull City
Southampton v Liverpool
Week commencing 23rd January:
Hull City v Manchester United
Liverpool v Southampton
The tie will bring back memories of one of Liverpool's best performances under Klopp.
In last season's quarter-final, the Reds destroyed Southampton 6-1 with Divock Origi netting a superb hat-trick.
However Klopp's last two trips to the South Coast have been memorable for the wrong reasons.
In March last year Liverpool inexplicably threw away a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 and two weeks ago they only came away with a 0-0 despite putting in one of their best performances of the season.
The other tie will see Hull City manager Mike Phelan will return to Old Trafford for the first time as a manager.
Phelan was Man United's assistant manager for five years under Sir Alex Ferguson.
The Tigers boss and Jose Mourinho will meet three times in three weeks with their second leg encounter at the KCOM Stadium taking place just a week before their league fixture at Old Trafford.
United inflicted a dramatic first league defeat on Hull in August when Marcus Rashford scored in the last minute on Humberside to secure a 1-0 win.
