Evans, 35, left Leicester at the end of last season following their relegation.

He has recently been training with United's Under-21s to gain fitness.

In this time he also stepped into first-team sessions, impressing boss Erik ten Hag in the process.

Following injuries to defenders Tyrell Malacia and Rhys Bennett, Evans has penned a short-term contract that enables him to feature in upcoming friendly matches.

SunSport understands that the deal is seen as a mutually beneficial short-term arrangement - with Evans able to gain fitness and United benefiting from his experience.

Evans will travel to Edinburgh as United face Lyon at Murrayfield on Wednesday.

He is then set to travel with the Red Devils' Under-21s as they head to San Diego for further pre-season matches.

Evans originally joined United as a teenager in 2004.

He subsequently broke through under Sir Alex Ferguson, making 198 first-team appearances for the Red Devils.

The dependable defender won three Premier League titles during his first Old Trafford stint, as well as the Champions League in 2008.

Evans played for United under Ferguson's successors David Moyes and Louis van Gaal, before departing for West Brom in 2015.

Following three seasons at the Hawthorns he moved to Leicester, helping the Foxes win the FA Cup in 2021.

Evans missed much of last season with a calf injury.

He was limited to just 13 Premier League appearances, although he did return to fitness in time to skipper Dean Smith's side for the final three matches.
