Frankie Dettori makes over £75,000 flogging rare items to help fund daughter’s wedding
FRANKIE DETTORI’s auction of over 100 ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ items to help fund his daughter’s wedding has raised over £75,000.
The legendary Italian will call time on his career later this year after a farewell tour across the globe.
As well as renting out his Newmarket mansion for £15,000 a month, Dettori also flogged some of his prestigious racing collection.
Some of the proceeds of the auction will go to charity, but Dettori is also helping to fund Ella’s wedding, touted to take place next year.
Ella competed in the 2021 Magnolia Cup at Glorious Goodwood and has been regularly seen on the racecourse.
The biggest seller from the auction was his Epsom Oaks trophy, which went for a huge £5,000.
He was awarded the trophy after winning the race on Soul Sister earlier this year, a second Classic of the year having already won the 2,000 Guineas on Chaldean.
Some of Dettori’s famous Godolphin silks also went for £4,600, while his saddle used in the 2005 Epsom Derby went for £1,400.
In total, the items went for £75,780, which will certainly make a dent in those wedding costs.
Racing fans still have four months left of Dettori, who will sign off from British shores at Ascot in October after his rides on British Champions day.
He will then head to the Breeders’ Cup, before a possible tilt at the Japan Cup.
The Melbourne Cup is a race that has eluded Dettori and he hopes to tick that off the list as his final racing endeavour.
Dettori has already won two of the four British Classics this year and is set to have an excellent chance of a third on Gregory in the St Leger.
The pair roared to success at Royal Ascot in the Queen’s Vase, a meeting where Dettori also rode the Gold Cup winner in the form of Courage Mon Ami.
Dettori will ride off into the sunset without his longstanding racing manager Pete Burrell, who he split with last week.
Burrell had been touted to help Dettori launch his post-racing career, with his personality looking a perfect for television.
I’m A Celebrity has been mentioned as a potential short-term destination, with his odds slashed earlier this year.
