Arteta had been left frustrated by the decision not to book Rodri for a foul on Kai Havertz.

He made his feelings known by approaching the fourth official before passionately waving an imaginary yellow card.

His antics would only result in getting himself booked, as Attwell walked over to reprimand the Gunners boss.

New rules for this season will see officials clamp down on such behaviour from managers.

Coaches and staff are to behave in a "responsible manner" at all times.

They must also remain in their technical areas during matches and cannot enter the pitch to speak to the officials.

Breaches are expected to bring heavier fines and potential bans amongst other punishments this season.

Managers, including Arteta on Sunday, will also attend pre-match briefings with the referee.

Having been booked against Manchester City, Arteta could later be sent off by Attwell.

If dismissed by the referee, then he would have to watch the remainder of the match from his team's dressing room.
