MIKAEL SILVESTRE says Amandou Onana is not a player Manchester United should be chasing as he is very similar to Scott McTominay.

Erik ten Hag is considering a shock move to sign the Everton midfielder as transfer talks with Fiorentina have stalled for Sofiyan Amrabat.

But this has raised questions on whether the 21-year-old is the right choice for a move to Old Trafford.

The ex-Man Utd ace said to : "I understand why, profile-wise, Amadou Onana is a player they are looking for.

"But when you have Scott McTominay, I don’t see what Onana will add to United if you want to step up and challenge for the title.

“He’s not a player United should be chasing.

“Physically, he and McTominay have the same profile, and it’s not an upgrade.

"So I don’t think it makes sense unless you’re looking for backup.”

Onana was one of Everton's top performers during a troublesome campaign last season.

He made 33 appearances for the club as they narrowly avoided relegation to the Championship.

Everton could demand up to £50m to let the Belgian international leave, having signed Onana for £33m last summer.

But another former Man Utd legend has also come out to say similar things about the Red Devils' attraction to the youngster.

Rio Ferdinand said Onana could end up being another Maroouana Fellaini- and does not fit Ten Hag's style of play.

However, the Man Utd boss remains keen to further bolster his midfield this summer, having already landed Mason Mount in a £60million deal from Chelsea.

United midfielder Fred has completed a move to , while Donny van de Beek has been linked with Real Sociedad.

Silvestre also said Bayern Munich's Benjamin Pavard would be the perfect fit for Ten Hag's side.

He said: " If Harry Maguire goes, he (Benjamin Pavard) can play in a three-man defence or a four-man defence as well as right back, so he brings versatility.

“Steady defender. Similar to Victor Lindelof profile-wise.

"Good on the ball and reads situations.

"Not necessarily fast or strong, but reads the game.

“He could help the manager to change the system at the back when needed.”

The Red Devils' deal to sign Pavard has been held up by the collapse of Harry Maguire's sale to West Ham.
