Gravenberch featured for Bayern off the bench in their opening match of the Bundesliga season, but has been left out in the cold since.

However, Tuchel has now explained why the Dutchman struggled to fit into his system and consequently why he is joining Liverpool - with the deal expected to cost £34milllion.

The ex-Chelsea boss said: "For me, he is a box-to-box midfielder, an attacking player.

"The main problem for him is that we don't really play with a number 8 in our 4-2-3-1 system. And we're spoilt for choice up front, with really experienced players."

Thanks to Jurgen Klopp's preference to play with three central midfielders, Gravenberch should fit into the Reds system like a glove.

Tuchel also revealed the 21-year-old was unhappy with his situation in Munich.

He continued: "Ryan is a very nice, hard-working, dedicated player. He wasn't happy with his situation.

"He sees an opportunity at Liverpool to compete for a place at the 8 in a 4-3-3.

"He's wanted to leave for a while. An offer came in and we talked about it. It's not done yet, but the outcome is clear."

Gravenberch is reportedly in Merseyside to undergo his medical before signing a five-year contract at Anfield.

In terms of incoming deals for the Germans, SunSport understands Bayern are locked in discussions with Fulham for Joao Palhinha.

However, the two sides are yet to agree a deal, with the Cottagers fighting hard to keep the player who was previously targeted by Manchester United and Tottenham.

Klopp has also played down talk of a shock move away for talisman Mohamed Salah amid interest from Saudi Arabia.
