Erik ten Hag splashed the cash on Rasmus Hojlund (£72m), Mason Mount (£60m) and Andre Onana (£47m) as he continued his Old Trafford overhaul.

The Dutchman took over last summer and bought Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martinez, Christian Eriksen, Casemiro and £85.5m man Antony during his first window in charge, subsequently adding to an already high-profile squad.

Even before Ten Hag's arrival, Man Utd had the likes of Harry Maguire (£80m), Jadon Sancho (£73m) and Bruno Fernandes (£60m).

And they now have the most expensive squad in the world as a result, totalling a whopping £989.6m.

Chelsea are also nearing the £1billion mark.

The Blues have actually spent £1b on transfers over the last year, but outgoings have seen the squad total fall just below the mark.

Although they recently bid farewell to the likes of Kai Havertz, Mason Mount, Kalidou Koulibaly, Mateo Kovacic and Edouard Mendy, the Blues have outspent every other club in the world since Todd Boehly took over.

Chelsea splashed a then-record-breaking £107m on Enzo Fernandez in January before spending a further £115m on Moises Caicedo last month.
