Antony has struggled since his £85.5million move from Ajax last summer.

His form has yet to improve this season, with the 23-year-old yet to score or register an assist.

However, he was handed a start against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup after being limited to four minutes off the bench in Sunday’s loss to Manchester City.

Ahead of Newcastle’s visit to Old Trafford on Wednesday, Cole gave his views on Antony’s attitude and contribution to the team.

“He would drive me absolutely mad,” the United icon told Sky Sports.

“He is an individual, we all know he is really left footed and will not go to the right hand side. So if you are a centre forward making a run to the near post, you know you will never get it.

“I look at things like that, he doesn’t score enough goals for me or create enough chances for his team-mates.

“You look at him and think, ‘what are you giving?’

“They spent a hell of a lot of money on him and the manager has backed him. He has found it really tough.”

Cole enjoyed seven successful years with United during his playing days.

He won 11 major trophies with the club, including the Champions League and five league titles.

The striker also scored an impressive 121 goals in 275 appearances for the Red Devils.
