Defender Varane appeared to vent his frustration at the long-serving midfielder, who viewers accused of being unable to keep hold of the ball in Sunday's Premier League clash.

One fan posted: "Not a single ball to him has stuck it’s embarrassing."

Another said: "Varane appeared to be shouting at McTominay there. #mufc need so much more from their front four, mainly the three behind Hojlund. Their use of the ball has been poor."

One observer said: "Varane giving the 'captain' a b****king."

A common verdict was: "Scott McTominay - Manchester United's captain away at Liverpool - cannot pass a football five yards."

In contrast, Academy product Kobbie Mainoo was praised for his all-round efforts in the centre.

One fan said: "Sofyan Amrabat looking lost, McTominay a waste of space and can't control or pass the ball, while 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo is showing them levels."
