And after a tense first-half, it was Newcastle who emerged victorious in a 3-0 win.

But the game was overshadowed by a controversial kit clash.

And travelling Toon supporters hit out at having to queue from 8am to catch designated buses to the Stadium of Light.

Magpies fans then had to wait for two hours before they could leave after full-time.

And many decided to make use of the arena’s bars which had remained.

But a technical glitch saw card readers lose Wifi connection and go offline as the Newcastle faithful started celebrating their win.

The claims bar staff had already been pouring pints in advance of a final whistle rush.

And they were unable to charge for the beers, allowing Toon fans to get merry on Sunderland’s dime.

One fan tweeted: “The best bit for me was when the card machines went off and we were given free pints.

“Made up for the fact we had to wait two hours to get out of the ground.”

Sunderland fans are sure to be unhappy over the thought of their rivals getting free beer following a devastating win.

They were left fuming before a ball had even been kicked after their club allowed “shameful” Newcastle slogans to be plastered all over a £600-a-head hospitality bar inside the Stadium of Light.

Owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus issued a grovelling apology after being accused of “rolling out the black and white carpet.”

Banners included slogans such as “Cheer Up Peter Reid” and “We Are United.”

And former Sunderland star Marco Gabbiadini branded the makeover “embarrassing”. adding: “This will be mentioned by Newcastle fans in 50 years.”
