A PROFESSIONAL golfer who spent years on the European Tour has committed suicide, according to reports.

Wayne Westner, who ranked as high as No40 in the world, is alleged to have killed himself in front of his wife at his family home in Pennington, South Africa.

Police received a call about a hostage situation after Westner, 55, forced entry into the home with a handgun following a split from his wife, according to reports.

Where was Wayne Westner from and what did he do?

Westner was born in Johannesburg in 1961.

He turned pro golfer in 1981 and spent years playing in the European Tour.

After spending 17 years as a pro, he turned his attention to other things.

Westner studied the art of the golf swing for 25 years and worked with some of the world's top teachers.

It was his passion for the sport which saw him become a coach, inspiring youngsters at the Wayne Westner Golf College in Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa.

He is also the inventer of 'Instant Golfer', a machine designed to help improve golfers' swings.

What did Wayne Westner win in his career?

Westner won 14 pro events in his career, including two European Tours in 1988 and 1991.

The golfer claimed the 1993 Dubai Desert Classic, beating compatriot Retief Goosen by two shots.

He also triumphed alongside fellow countryman Ernie Els to win the 1996 World Cup of Golf.

Why did Wayne Westner's career end?

Westner's career came to an end due to injury.

During a pre-tournament Pro-Am at the 1998 Madeira Island Open, Westner tore his ankle ligaments after falling over six feet when a railway sweeper gave way underneath him.

He only managed to play once more that season, and quit the professional game after.
