However, manager Chris Wilder is pushing for a dramatic late push to avoid a quick return to the Championship.

And that will see Sheffield United adding some much-needed reinforcement during the January transfer window.

According to transfer insider , Grbic, 28, is set to move to Bramall Lane.

The goalkeeper will be making the switch after Atletico landed Romanian shotstopper Horatiu Moldovan from Rapid Bucharest.

This comes amid a busy January transfer window for Atleti, who are now set to also sign Moise Kean and Arthur Vermeeren from Juventus and Royal Antwerp.

Grbic joined Atletico from Lokomotiva in 2020 but struggled for minutes as he played second fiddle to Diego Simeone's No1 Jan Oblak.

That led to a loan stint the next year to Lille where the Croatia international amassed 29 appearances.

The Croat returned to the Wanda Metropolitano in 2022 as Oblak's understudy once more.

Grbic would be leaving Madrid after almost four years with only 14 appearances under his belt, while he has yet to play this season.

Sheffield United have conceded the most goals out of any other Premier League club this term.

The Blades have picked up the ball from their own net a total of 51 times in 21 Prem matches.
