ENGLISH football chiefs are set to support Fifa’s controversial plans for a 48-team World Cup.

It is believed the FA and the other home nations would back the proposal provided Europe — who currently have 14 final spots —  are guaranteed extra places, potentially starting at the 2026  tournament.

Fifa’s council are expected to give the green light  to expanding the World Cup from 32 teams at a meeting in Zurich next week.

It would be played in a format of 16 groups of three nations, with the top two going to a knockout round of 32 — meaning a total of 80 games.
