SUNDERLAND co-owner Juan Sartori delivered a brutal dig at Roy Keane over why they didn’t appoint him as manager in 2022.
Languishing in League One following Lee Johnson‘s sacking, there was a huge clamour on Wearside to bring Keane back to the Stadium of Light.
The Irishman, 52, managed the Black Cats between 2006 and 2008, leading Sunderland from 23rd in the Championship to the Premier League.
He then had an unsuccessful spell at Ipswich before coaching stints with the Republic of Ireland, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest.
Keane held interviews for the vacant Sunderland job but said at the time: “The deal has to be right for everyone.
“It didn’t fall into place last week. It wasn’t meant to be.
“Everything has to be right – the right challenge, the right contract. You have to fancy it.”
However, Sartori – who has a 36 per cent stake in the Mackems alongside Kyril Louis-Dreyfus – revealed why they turned Keane down.
A third season of the smash Netflix hit Sunderland ‘Til I Die is out next Tuesday, chronicling their promotion back to the Championship during the 2021-22 campaign after four years in the third tier.
Addressing the Keane question, Sartori said: “Roy Keane would have been fun.

“It definitely would have been good for the Netflix series but maybe we would have had a third season of disastrous finishes!”
Alex Neil took the job instead and led Sunderland to a play-off final win over Wycombe.
