What is a maximum break in snooker?

A maximum break in snooker is the most amount of points you can score in one visit to the table, which is 147.

A 147 is scored when a player pots all 15 reds with a black on each occasion for 120 points, followed by the remaining colours and finishing on the black again for the final 27 points.

How many 147s have been made at the World Championships?

Maximums have been a rarity at The Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.

Despite the tens of thousands of frames that have been played during snooker's biggest competition, only 14 have ever been made at the famous venue.

Two were made last year - by Mark Selby in the final and Kyren Wilson in the last 32 - which is only the second time two have been made in one tournament, after it happened in 2008 (Ali Carter and Ronnie O'Sullivan).

Stephen Hendry has made the most 147s at The Crucible, with three, with O'Sullivan the only other player making more than one.

The Rocket, famously, has also given up the opportunity to score more 147s because of the prize money on offer.

The Essex star previously stated he has been "on strike" since the prize money was cut.

Has anybody scored more than 147 in a single break?

During qualifying at the UK Championship in 2004, Jamie Burnett scored a 148 against Leo Fernandez in very infrequent circumstances.

The Scot potted the brown as a free ball, then sunk the brown again, followed by 15 reds with 12 blacks, two pinks and a blue, then the six colours to end.

What is the Golden Ball and will it be used at the World Championships?

The Riyadh Season World Masters of Snooker, which was won by O'Sullivan in March, upset snooker purists after tournament organisers introduced a new ball on the table

The tournament introduced a controversial new 23rd ball, known as the 'Riyadh Season ball', which will be gold.

It was worth 20 points and could only be potted if a player is on course to make a maximum break - the 20 points would take the maximum total from 147 to 167.

During the tournament the ball came off the table as soon as it was impossible to score a maximum, which was in the vast majority of frames.
