Nottingham Forest points deduction LIVE: Prem side could be docked points for a SECOND time amid FFP breach

- Forest hit by points deduction

RELEGATION-threatened Nottingham Forest could be hit with another points deduction after being docked four points yesterday.

Unless the Premier League side sell a star player by June, they could face further punishments, which would come into effect next season.

In its ruling, issued on Monday, the League claimed Nottingham Forest overspent PSR by £34.5m.

Now, in a bid to avoid further punishment, Forest could be forced to sell another star player worth £30m or more.

Yesterday's point deduction saw Forest crash into the relegation zone, throwing their Premier League survival into doubt with just nine games remaining.

  • Why did Everton receive a harsher punishment?

Everton have been docked 6 points, lowered from 10, for breaching PSR, compared to Forest's 4.

So why have Forest received a more lenient punishment than the Merseyside club?

Put simply, Forest accepted the charges at the earliest opportunity while Everton chose to fight their case.

  • Could Manchester City face a points deduction?

Last February, Pep Guardiola’s team were hit with 115 allegations of breaching competition rules between 2009 and 2018 by the Premier League.

The club denies all charges and has vowed to clear its name.

These charges are far more complex than those levied at Everton and Forest.

That means any punishment for the alleged rule breaches could take much longer to be announced.

  • How many points were Everton docked?

Nottingham Forest aren't the only Premier League side to be docked points this season.

Everton were hit with a 10-point deduction earlier this season for breaching PSR.

This was later reduced to six points.

  • What are Forest accused of?

Nottingham Forest admitted on December 31 when they filed their accounts for last season that they had breached the allowed Profitability and Sustainability limit.

They finally admitted a breach of £34.536m.

This breach has seen the side docked four points while in a crucial relegation battle.

  • The relegation run-in

Here is how Nottingham Forest's run-in compares to their relegation rivals.

  • Nottingham Forest’s upcoming fixtures

    • Crystal Palace
    • Fulham
    • Tottenham
    • Wolves
    • Everton
  • How much are clubs allowed to lose under PSR?

Clubs who are in the Prem for three seasons are limited to “allowable losses” - after calculations including the “amortisation” of transfer fees, stadium building and Covid-related expenditure are taken out - of £105m over three seasons.

As Forest only had one top flight campaign, their limit was £61m.

Forest, the Premier League argues, made losses greater than that number.

  • How the table looks after yesterday's points deduction

  • Nottingham Forest hits back amid points deduction

Nottingham Forest slammed the Premier League in

It read: "Nottingham Forest is extremely disappointed with the decision of the Commission to impose a sanction on the Club of four points, to be applied with immediate effect.

"Notwithstanding our disappointment, we thank the Commission for agreeing to deal with this matter on an expedited basis. The Club considers it to be essential for the integrity of the league to have charges resolved in the season in which they are issued.

"We were extremely dismayed by the tone and content of the Premier League’s submissions before the Commission.

"After months of engagement with the Premier League, and exceptional cooperation throughout, this was unexpected and has harmed the trust and confidence we had in the Premier League.

"That the Premier League sought a sanction of eight points as a starting point was utterly disproportionate when compared to the nine points that their own rules prescribe for insolvency."

  • How could Forest avoid further punishment?

Raising cash through player sales is a surefire way to prevent falling foul of FFP once again.

The obvious candidate for sale is Morgan Gibbs White, but Forest would have to raise at least £45m for the star to make any deal profitable.

Last summer, Forest delayed the sale of Brennan Johnson to Tottenham in a bid to raise more funds, this, however, saw them fail to meet FFP's deadline.

  • Nottingham Forest could face SECOND points deduction

Nottingham Forest could be docked more points next season unless they sell a star player this summer.

Forest are already £26m over their spending limit for this season.

This means the City Ground club could find itself in hot water again unless it raises £30m through sales before the June deadline.

  • Where do Nottingham Forest sit in the table?

Forest have been hit with a four-point penalty for breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules.

It sees them go from 17th on 25 points to 18th and in the drop zone on 21 points.

Luton have been the biggest beneficiaries from the news as they now rise just above safety without even kicking a ball.

  • Luton boss speaks about points deduction

Following Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Forest, Luton boss Rob Edwards spoke of the new threat of points deductions for Premier League sides.

“It is quite chaotic and new for us all,” he said.

“There have been a lot of first-time experiences this season we’re having to deal with.”

  • How did the four-point deduction come about?

Since their promotion via the 2022 play-off final, the club have bought 42 players.

They have broke their transfer record three times for Taiwo Awoniyi, Morgan Gibbs-White and Ibrahim Sangare.

In their case against the independent panel, Forest admitted the breach but have argued they only broke the rules for two months while filling their accounts between June 30 and September 1.

  • Summary – what we know so far

Forest are likely to appeal and have 14 days to launch their case.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are the second team to be slapped by a deduction after Everton were docked six points.

They originally had 10 taken from their total but it was reduced after a successful appeal.
