We have learned that WWE representatives approached the Crumlin grappler with a view to making a sensational appearance at April’s event — but they appear to have been unsuccessful.

A source explained: “WWE has made no secret of its desire to do something with Conor McGregor and there were talks between the two parties about this year.

“Because he’s taking time off from the UFC, there was a talk about doing something at this year’s Wrestlemania in April, but it wasn’t to be despite a hefty offer.”

A spokesperson for WWE declined to comment on the claims when contacted by last night.

Stars like Muhammad Ali, Floyd Mayweather, Shaquille O’Neal, Mike Tyson and Ronda Rousey have all taken part in WWE’s flagship event in the past.

In fact, McGregor’s antagonist Mayweather earned a reported €16million for a match against the Big Show in 2008.

Conor’s representatives paved the way for the career switch after he became a dual UFC champion last November.

His agent Audie Attar explained: “I think it’s all about business, man. If WWE is going to come with an offer, we’re willing to entertain it.”

Wrestling icon Triple H — in charge of talent at WWE — previously admitted he would love to sign the trash-talking Dubliner.

He gushed: “He could come over, he’s got it all, man. He’s got the personality, the skills, the talk. He’s an entertainer.”

Conor has regularly teased WWE. He hit the headlines when he singled out John Cena, labelling the 15-time world champion a “big fat, 40-year-old failed Mr Olympia mother******.”
